Donor Spotlight – Howard L. Alt

Howard was a great friend of the Lurie Garden. We first got to know Howard when he came to one of our Plant Sales and needed two wheelbarrows to help him get his purchases to his car! He would visit the garden frequently and send us questions.  As we got to know him, we came to learn that he was paying very close attention to the garden’s plants and plant communities as well as educating himself on how to make a naturalistic planting at his home and in his neighborhood. Howard was a kindred spirit – he understood Lurie Garden, shared our excitement, and was eager to share the benefits gardens like ours offer to our communities and the human spirit. We will miss him.

In memory of Howard, the Alt family provides ongoing donations to the Millennium Park Foundation to support Lurie Garden’s nature education events and horticultural operations. Our education events are always free and open to the public, and aim to bring the community closer to nature through lectures, hands-on activities, and garden walks.

Lurie Garden is part of Millennium Park and the Garden’s horticultural maintenance and operations is the responsibility of the Millennium Park Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the stewardship of Millennium Park.
