Soil and Plants Working Together – A Healthy Garden Community!
Soil is not dirt! Soil is the medium that provides plant roots with a stable environment and provides access to the necessary nutrients of plant life. Dirt, on the other hand, is soil that has been damaged through, compaction, leaching, excessive nutrients, loss of organic matter, or a combination of these. The proper selection of plants, knowing how they work together, can make a garden more than the sum of its individual parts.
Gerould Wilhelm, co-author of Flora of the Chicago Region, and Roy Diblik, author of the Know Maintenance Garden will be joining forces to show us how healthy soil and plant choices can lead to a healthier garden community. Jerry Wilhelm will highlight how healthy soil must have the structure to sustain itself and sufficient pore space for water and oxygen in an intricate array while Roy Diblik will be introducing us to some of his “sixteen friends” and will show how they work together as members of a healthy garden community.
