Paeonia lactiflora ‘Jan van Leeuwen’ (peony ‘Jan van Leeuwen’) has large, cup-like white flowers with deep yellow centers. Before blooming ants and birds enjoy sweet liquid peony buds excrete prior to flowering.
Peony ‘Jan van Leeuwen’ blooms in mid to late spring on three-foot stems. It is a long-lived, clump-forming, shrub-like perennial. Its glossy, dark green compound leaves look great all summer, even after the beautiful silky white flowers fade. In the fall the leaves may turn orange before the whole plant dies back to the ground at first frost.
